Friends of Buckingham Cemetery
This group's objectives are to preserve and record all the historic heritage of cemetery including monuments, buildings and the flora.
There are currently 15 members who now belong to the National Federation of Cemetery Friends (NFCF). The Friends of Buckingham Cemetery work to bring public awareness of the site and to return it to a valuable and attractive place.
The aim of the group is: a cemetery should be a quiet, beautiful place, a public asset, fit for reflection and contemplation. Buckingham Cemetery is nothing like this at the moment, but it could be.
The cemetery has fine mature trees and unique and rare flora and fauna. Various native species can be seen within the cemetery including birds, squirrels and butterflies. The habitat protects all these creatures and protects the Lichens which live on the headstones and older monuments.
As volunteers the friends help with:
- General tidying (cleaning, pruning and planting).
- Monitoring routine works (grass cutting and tree works).
- Monitoring the council maintenance, restoration and repair.
- Monitoring and recommending safety work, remedial works.
- Suggesting improvement for access (particularly for the disabled and elderly).
- Preserving and conserving wildlife.
- Cataloguing the trees and erecting bat and bird boxes.
- Promoting the site, organising guided walks/photography.
- Giving talks on the history, flora and fauna.
- Promoting cemetery safety and the countering of vandalism.
