If, from a previous tenancy or licence, you owe rent, court costs or recharges in respect of damaged property to the Council, the whole amount will have to be cleared for you to be eligible for permanent re-housing through the Housing & Transfer Register. This also applies to tenants or past tenants of other local authorities or Registered Social Landlords.

In certain circumstances we may agree that you clear this by paying a weekly amount over a period of nine months.

Clearing debts

If you are clearing bad debts owed to the Council over an agreed nine month period, and paying any weekly charges due for temporary accommodation, you may become eligible for an offer of a home once your name has reached the top of the Housing & Transfer Register waiting list.

If you reach the top of the list quicker than nine months, and you can clear your debt and be up to date on any accommodation charges, you can have the tenancy of a permanent home without waiting longer than necessary.
