Recycling
We provide each household with 2 recycling baskets that are emptied fortnightly and a glass recycling box which is emptied every 4 weeks.
One recycling basket is for paper and the other is for mixed cans and plastics. We will collect as much paper, plastics and cans recycling as you put out, but please don't mix paper with other recycled materials in the same basket.
We recommend that you wash and squash all your plastic packaging before placing it in your basket, however if you are finding that one basket is not enough to store your recycling in, you can order an extra set of up to 3 baskets/boxes. Call 01296 585510 for more information.
We are happy to collect excess plastic, cans and paper. However please use a suitable container to store them in. The container should be no larger than the black basket provided by AVDC and we ask you to avoid using black sacks, carrier bags or cardboard boxes as these can cause health and safety problems for our crews and we cannot recycle these materials along with your plastic, cans or paper. Please note glass will only be collected from the box provided by AVDC and for safety reasons our crews will only remove level loads.
What can I recycle?
Download a complete list of which materials can and cannot be placed in your recycling baskets and boxes here.
White paper basket:
Newspapers, magazines, all directories, writing paper, junk mail, catalogues and shredded paper, as long it is properly contained to prevent it blowing around. We suggested you use a white envelope to contain it. You can also recycle white envelopes - even those with windows - but not brown ones. We cannot recycle dyed paper such as art paper or gift wrapping paper. If you are unsure if the paper is white, do the rip test. Tear part of the paper and look at the fibres. If they are white, you can place the paper in the basket.
Cans and plastics basket:
Newsflash! We can now collect almost all your plastic food packaging for recycling and recovery. This includes plastic bottles, yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, punnets and plastic egg boxes and aluminium aerosol cans . The things you cannot recycle in this way are plastic bags, cling film, cellophane and expanded polystyrene (a foam-like, brittle material often used for meat trays, packaging beads and disposable hot drinks cups).
Rinse out and crush cans, tins and plastic bottles before putting them in your baskets and either stack them or put something heavy on them to prevent things from blowing around.
Glass box:
One glass recycling box is provided to each property. If you have more glass than will fit comfortably into one glass box, additional boxes can be requested. Please contact 01296 585510 to place an order. However, the boxes are ideal for carrying bottles to a bottle bank when you do your weekly shop (almost all supermarkets have glass banks on or near their premises). Please rinse your bottles and jars before placing them in the box.
Please do not include any broken glass, Pyrex, drinks glasses, window glass, mirrors, light bulbs, china or pottery, milk bottles (return them to your milkman for reuse), corks, bottle tops and lids (place these in your plastic and cans box for recycling).
