The Community Chest

What is the Community Chest?

The Community Chest was formed as part of the agreement to transfer housing stock from AVDC to the Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust (VAHT). The Community Chest is a partnership fund accountable to both the district council and the housing trust.

It is expected that funds of up to £500,000 per year will be available from 2007 - 2017.

Funding programmes available under the Community Chest include:

  • Micro grants up to £1,000 – easily accessible grants for projects or groups for a variety of different uses such as buying new equipment for your group, start-up costs, rent, special events or community projects etc. This fund is open from March 2007, applications can be submitted at any time, closing date 15th of each month.
  • Project grants up to £25,000 – both for new projects and for existing projects that can demonstrate they are successful in meeting local needs. Community and voluntary groups, including social enterprises, are eligible to apply for these one-off grants. This fund is open from March 2007, and the next closing dates for applications are 18 July and 5 December 2008. Grants will be available 3-4 times per year.
  • Long term revenue funding for voluntary and community organisations providing services for local people that meet a local need and that the Community Chest Grants Panel have indicated they would like to support This is a two stage application process. The first step being a simple form to check whether the Panel would be likely to favourably consider a full application from the organisation and the second stage giving more details about the service to be supported. Funding available of up to £25,000 pa for up to three years. This limited stream of grants was fully subscribed for its first round in 2007, and will reopen in 2010.

How to apply

Download and read the grants criteria and summary at the bottom of this page. If your project is eligible, contact the grants officer with a brief description of your project and the amount required - an application form can then be posted or emailed to you.

Initially you should discuss your ideas with the community chest grants officer. They will be able to offer advice and assistance on how to develop your project and application, so that we are able to process your application as smoothly as possible. The grants officer can also provide you with the necessary application forms.
